An idea that became everyone's – about when local commitment and the right support change an entire society

The idea for the Leisure Bank was born in Deje, where Carina worked as a deacon and met families and single parents who could not afford equipment for outdoor days and activities. Children stayed home from school when they lacked skis, helmets or rubber boots, and Carina saw how it affected entire families.

At the same time, she experienced firsthand how expensive it could be for children who wanted to try new sports – even for families with a stable budget. It became clear that a new way of sharing resources was needed. ”I thought there should be a place where you can borrow things like this – not just from friends, but as a shared resource.”

When collaboration became crucial

She contacted Roger Nilsson at Forshaga Municipality, who she knew was similar to her in attitude – curious, forward-thinking and open to new ideas.
”"It was Forshaga Municipality and Ullerud Parish that was what it was called then, and then it was "An Opener Värmland". We all had completely different ways of being and characteristics, so we matched each other very well."”

Carina emphasizes that this is exactly what made the idea possible:
”"I know that's what laid the foundation for Fritidsbanken to actually exist today and be found in so many places. It probably wouldn't have happened if it had just been me who started it."”

Leader Proximity gave strength at the start

In the early stages, the project received support from Leader Proximity, which meant a lot.
”The important thing was that someone believed in us. A yes at the beginning means everything. If we had been told no then, this might never have happened.”

What difference has the Leisure Bank made?

Today, Fritidsbanken is present all over the country and has changed both people and structures:

  • more children can participate and be involved in activities regardless of their financial situation
  • circular economy in practice – sharing instead of ownership
  • more people get out and exercise and feel better
  • internships and job opportunities for people far from the labor market
  • increased community and participation

One memory Carina carries with her is a boy who borrowed equipment to go on a ski trip with the class. Something that otherwise wouldn't have happened and it was a fantastic experience for the boy. "That gives me the shivers. It shows how much this actually means."”

Carina's advice for those of you who have an idea

”Believe in your idea – it can become reality. And above all: surround yourself with people who are not like you, who know things you can't, hang on to someone you can rely on for support."”

She also encourages seeking support from networks and organizations that know the process.
And finally:
”Dare to believe in the idea and present it with confidence.”

Ideas that change start close by

The Leisure Bank is an example of how a local idea, together with people's commitment and support at the right time, can grow into something that makes a difference nationally.
