About the project

Investigation of salmon and trout release sites for fishing in Lake Vänern

The project, driven by the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland in collaboration with Vänersamarbetet, Laxfond Vänern, sport fishing clubs, and research actors, will investigate whether released salmon and trout smolt at Hjortens udde stay in Vänern or migrate out via Göta älv. The results will be crucial for future release strategies and thus for Vänern's sport fishing tourism, which is important for Vänern's visitor industry and local economy. Through acoustic telemetry, we will obtain scientific data for the first time to optimize releases, secure the attractiveness of trolling fishing, and strengthen businesses around the lake. The project thus contributes to sustainable fish management, increased tourism, and long-term rural development.

The project is a collaborative project involving three leader areas around Vänern: Leader Närheten, Leader Framtidsbygder, and Leader Nordvästra Skaraborg.

Project purpose and goals

The purpose of the project is to strengthen the conditions for sport fishing in Lake Vänern. The goal of the project is to create a report on the movement patterns of exposed salmon and/or trout smolt in Lake Vänern.

The project consists of tagging smolt as well as mapping through telemetry, data analysis, compilation, and reporting of results.
